CNN Founder Ted Turner Dies at 87

Ted Turner, the bold media mogul who transformed global television journalism through the launch of CNN, has died at the age of 87.

Turner reportedly passed away on Tuesday evening surrounded by family, according to statements released by Turner Enterprises. Tributes from journalists, political leaders, and media organizations around the world immediately began pouring in as news of his death spread.

Widely regarded as one of the most revolutionary figures in broadcasting history, Turner changed television forever in 1980 when he launched CNN — the world’s first 24-hour news network. At a time when critics doubted audiences would watch nonstop news coverage, Turner pushed ahead with a vision that would eventually redefine modern journalism.

Under his leadership, CNN became a dominant global force, particularly during major historic moments including the Gulf War, U.S. presidential elections, and international crises. His influence extended far beyond news broadcasting.

Turner also helped build major television brands including:

Outside media, Turner was known for his environmental activism, philanthropy, and ownership of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. In 1997, he pledged $1 billion to support United Nations humanitarian initiatives, helping establish the United Nations Foundation.

Media analysts describe Turner as a fearless risk-taker whose unconventional personality reshaped the cable television industry. Though controversial at times, many credit him with pioneering the fast-paced global news culture that exists today.

Funeral arrangements and memorial plans are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
