Ferdinand Omanyala storms to 100m victory in Xiamen

Kenya’s sprint star Ferdinand Omanyala delivered a powerful performance to win the men’s 100m race at the Xiamen Diamond League in China, clocking an impressive 9.94 seconds.

The African record holder showed his class with a strong late surge, edging out South Africa’s Gift Leotlela, who finished second in 10.00 seconds. American sprinter Trayvon Bromell came in third with a time of 10.03 seconds in a highly competitive field.

This victory marked a strong comeback for Omanyala after finishing second in the previous Diamond League meeting in Shanghai, where Leotlela had narrowly beaten him. His performance in Xiamen underlined his consistency and growing dominance on the global sprinting stage.

Despite the presence of top-tier athletes including Olympic and world medallists, Omanyala maintained composure and executed a near-perfect race, accelerating midway and holding off challengers in the final meters.

The win is also a season’s best for the Kenyan sprinter and reinforces his position as one of the fastest men in the world this year. It signals strong form as he builds toward upcoming global championships, where he is expected to compete against the world’s elite.

Leaders in Kenya, including Musalia Mudavadi and Rigathi Gachagua, praised Omanyala’s achievement, describing it as a moment of national pride and inspiration to young athletes.

Omanyala’s continued success is helping redefine Kenya’s global athletics identity—proving the country can excel not only in long-distance races but also in sprinting events traditionally dominated by other nations.
