The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has streamlined Kenya’s motor vehicle ownership transfer process by moving the service online, reducing the processing period from several days to just one day.
The initiative is part of the authority’s ongoing digital transformation aimed at improving service delivery, minimizing queues, and making transactions more convenient for motorists.
Vehicle Transfers Now Available Online
In a notice issued on Thursday, July 16, NTSA announced that vehicle buyers and sellers can now complete ownership transfer applications entirely through its online platform without the need for lengthy visits to NTSA offices.
The authority said the upgraded system is designed to provide faster processing and a smoother customer experience.
“For motor vehicle transfer services, no more standing in line or waiting for hours—time you could use to do other important things,” NTSA said.
Processing Time Reduced to One Day
Previously, motorists typically waited at least three days for a vehicle ownership transfer to be finalized. Under the new system, the process is expected to be completed within 24 hours, provided all the required documents and information are submitted correctly.
The move is expected to speed up vehicle transactions while reducing congestion at NTSA service centres across the country.
Part of NTSA’s Digital Transformation
The online transfer service complements NTSA’s broader digitization strategy, which includes the rollout of electronic logbooks (eLogbooks).
The digital logbook system is intended to combat fraud, simplify record management, and enable instant verification of vehicle ownership by financial institutions, law enforcement agencies, and other authorized parties.
How to Transfer a Vehicle Online
Motorists can complete the vehicle transfer process by following these steps:
- Log in to your eCitizen account.
- Open the NTSA Service Portal.
- Select the Motor Vehicle tab and click View.
- Choose Motor Vehicle Services, then select Vehicle Transfer and click Apply.
- Upload the original logbook in PDF format.
- Select the appropriate ownership category and enter the new owner’s details.
- Review the information carefully before submitting the application.
- Pay the required vehicle transfer fee.
- Return to the homepage and accept the Consent Notification to complete the transfer process.
Faster and More Convenient Service
By digitizing vehicle ownership transfers, NTSA aims to make the process faster, more transparent, and accessible from anywhere in Kenya. The new system is expected to reduce paperwork, eliminate unnecessary delays, and improve efficiency for both buyers and sellers.
