Kericho Governor Eric Mutai Impeached After Heated County Assembly Vote

Kericho, Kenya – Governor Eric Mutai has been impeached following a dramatic and highly charged special sitting of the Kericho County Assembly on Friday afternoon.

Out of 47 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), 33 voted in favour of the motion to remove him from office, while 14 opposed. The tally comfortably cleared the constitutional two-thirds threshold required to oust a sitting county chief.

The impeachment motion accused Governor Mutai of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, and mismanagement of county resources. Debate on the floor was tense and at times heated, with MCAs exchanging sharp words before the vote was taken electronically.

Governor Mutai, present in the chambers and flanked by his legal team led by lawyer Katwa Kigen, had earlier attempted to have the voting conducted through a roll call — a move that failed.

This is not the first time Mutai has faced removal from office. In a previous attempt, 31 MCAs had voted for his impeachment, but the Senate dismissed the case on procedural grounds.

Announcing Friday’s results to a packed public gallery, Assembly Speaker confirmed the resolution would now be forwarded to the Senate. There, Governor Mutai will have an opportunity to defend himself against the charges. If the Senate upholds the County Assembly’s decision, Mutai will be permanently removed from office.

The political spotlight now shifts to the Senate, where the outcome could reshape Kericho’s political landscape in the coming weeks.
