All you need to know about the late Evans Gicheru

Evans Gicheru, Kenya’s former Chief Justice has died aged 79.  Announcing the ex- Judiciary President’s sudden death, Chief Justice David Maraga said that Mr Gicheru played a big role in enhancing Kenya’s Judicial independence.

Mr Gicheru was appointed to the executive arm of government by former president Mwai Kibaki in 2003.

Justice Maraga eulogized saying;

“Kenya and Judiciary family have lost a steadfast public servant, a selfless professional and humble human being”.

Mr Gicheru had a lengthy career as a public servant when he was appointed as the Wajir District officer. Later on, he served as a senior state counsel in the Attorney General’s office.

He also served as the president’s office administrative officer before moving to the judiciary as a Judge of the High Court in 1982.

He served as the Republic of Kenya’s 12th chief justice and his tenure lasted from 2003 till his retirement in 2011.

The actual cause of his death will be revealed in due course.
